A Major New Film Investment for South Africa

South Africa’s film industry is set for a major boost after STUDIOCANAL, the in-house studio of CANAL+, announced The Road Home, a large-scale feature film inspired by one of the most influential moments in music history. With a reported production budget of approximately R300 million, the film will begin principal photography in Cape Town on 29 June 2026. The production is expected to employ more than 300 local crew members and up to 3,500 extras, creating significant opportunities across the country’s creative economy.

Industry observers say the project reinforces South Africa’s growing reputation as a world-class destination for international film production, combining skilled local talent, iconic locations and globally competitive production standards.

The film tells a deeply South African story set during the cultural and political tension surrounding Paul Simon’s 1986 album Graceland, a project that introduced township-inspired sounds to millions around the world. At the heart of the story is legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela, portrayed by acclaimed South African actor Thabo Rametsi. After years in exile, Masekela finds himself torn between competing ideals as anti-apartheid leaders challenge Simon’s decision to record South African-inspired music during the United Nations cultural boycott.

The film also explores the role of global icon Miriam Makeba known worldwide as “Mama Africa,” played by Cynthia Erivo , and the musicians who helped turn Graceland into a landmark cultural moment. Rather than focusing only on controversy, the story is expected to highlight how music became a force of resilience, identity and global connection.

Producers say the screenplay was developed through extensive historical research to ensure authenticity and cultural accuracy. The project drew on resources from the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, with contributions from respected South African novelist Zakes Mda. Writers also conducted in-depth interviews during development, including discussions connected to the Graceland era.

The decision to shoot on location in Cape Town further strengthens the city’s status as one of the most attractive filming destinations in the Southern Hemisphere.Cape Town has become known for its cinematic landscapes, professional crews, studio infrastructure and ability to double for international locations. With productions increasingly seeking cost-effective premium destinations, South Africa continues to gain momentum.

The announcement also carries strategic importance following CANAL+’s acquisition process involving MultiChoice Group.

Executives say projects like The Road Home signal a stronger commitment to investing in African storytelling with international reach. The combination of local insight and global distribution could create new pathways for South African stories to travel further than ever before.

Following the announcement, conversations across Instagram, TikTok and X reflected strong mixed reactions on the language Miariam Makeba spoke isiXhosa

I know the beautiful Cynthia is a great actress and singer , and she will probably kill it ,but I always thought Zonke has a strong Mama Makeba resemblance, and the fact that she’s Xhosa and can belt a note…well ….we’ll have to wait and see I guess.” – Instagram user
